Easy Radish Kimchi

Wintertime is a good season to have juicy radish. I went to Super G mart in Greensboro and got a good radish. The process to make kimchi can be various depending on the family's secret recipes and special ingredients. I make it as much as simple but tasty! <Ingredients> Veggie ingredients Radish One onion One bunch of green onions One carrot Sauce ingredients Three Tablespoons of Flour Two Cups of Water One cup of red pepper powder One cup of red pepper flakes Half cup of Paprika powder (optional) 1/4 cup of salt One small apple (minced; can be substituted for sugar) Ten cloves of garlic - minced One cup of fish sauce 1. Cut radish into small cubes. 2. Put cut radish in the large bowl and sprinkle one tablespoon of sugar and three tablespoons of coarse salt. 3. Toss radish so that sugar and salt can be well mixed. 4. Set aside for 30 minutes. (toss regularly if you have time) 5. In a small saucepan, add two cups of water and three tablespoons of flour then stir. 6. In medium

Alignment between National College Entrance Examinations and Mathematics Curriculum Standards: A Comparative Analysis

Dae S. Hong, Yejun Bae , Yu-Fen Wu http://doi.org/10.7468/jksmed.2019.22.3.153 | 2019 Korean Society of Mathematical Education ABSTRACT Measuring alignment of various educational components is an important issue in educational research because with aligned educational system, we can have clear expectations about what  to teach and assess. In this study, we examined the alignment between mathematics curriculum  standards and college entrance examinations from Korea and China. The results indicate that  curriculum standards and high stakes assessments from both countries are not well aligned to  each other. Their Surveys of Enacted Curriculum (SEC) indices were lower than what previous  studies have found and the critical values (Fulmer, 2011; Liu & Fulmer, 2008; Liu et al., 2009).  There are several topics that are not assessed in both countries’ national assessments. Also,  discrepancies between the most frequently covered topics in the curriculum standards and the  most frequently

Action Research: First-Year Primary School Science Teachers’ Conceptions on and Enactment of Science Inquiry in Singapore

Soo Chiang James Long and Yejun Bae DOI 10.1186/s41029-017-0017-9 | Asia-Pacific Science Education  ABSTRACT This action research project examines first year science teachers’ conceptions of scientific inquiry and their challenges in implementing inquiry-based lessons. Classroom observations and interviews represent two first-year primary school science teachers’ conceptions of science as inquiry. Because the current educational landscape emphasizes inquiry-based learning as a foundation of science education, teacher-training in Singapore focuses on augmenting the quality of inquiry-based science lessons. Through a mandatory reduced workload, first-year primary school science teachers can focus on transitioning from being student teachers to full-time teachers. A video of each teacher’s lesson was analysed using the EQUIP (Electronic Quality of Inquiry Protocol) instrument. Data analysis of the interviews involved a process of a priori coding based on the essential features of inquiry

A Meta-Analytic Review of the Effectiveness of the Science Writing Heuristic Approach on Academic Achievement in Turkey

Yejun Bae, Ercin Sahin http://doi.org/10.7468/jksmed.2021.24.3.175 | 2021 Korean Society of Mathematical Education ABSTRACT The Science Writing Heuristic (SWH) approach is described as an immersive argument-based science inquiry focusing particularly on learning through epistemic practices. In the literature, several previous studies indicate how academic achievement is positively influenced by the SWH. In addition to these previous studies, several meta-syntheses of qualitative data have been conducted on this particular topic. With these literatures in mind, a quantitative meta-analysis was conducted with ten studies (N =724) to examine the effectiveness of the SWH on student achievement in Turkey. To present a thoroughly detailed report, this study also examined the following moderators: grade level, subject area, school location, intervention length, and report source. Overall, this study found that in Turkey, the SWH classrooms performed better in academic achievement tests than

Developing latent constructs of dialogic interaction to examine the epistemic climate: Rasch modeling

Yejun Bae | Gavin W. Fulmer | Brian M. Hand School Science and Mathematics | DOI: 10.1111/ssm.12460   ABSTRACT This study investigates two latent constructs (Engagement and Value) of dialogic interaction to examine the epistemic climate. Since the new reform movement emphasizes creating generative learning environments, it is important to examine whether a classroom promotes students’ knowledge generation or limit students’ epistemicgrowth through rote memorization. At this point, it is inevitable to focus on dialogic interaction (one of the epistemic practices), because how students engage with and view dialogic interaction provides meaningful information about the epistemic climate. By employing Rasch modeling, this study tested a statistical validity of two latent constructs of dialogic interaction. The findings in this study highlight that the two latent constructs are theoretically and statistically valid and can be used to gauge the epistemic climate through students’ engagement

Publishing articles from Your Dissertation

For early-career researchers/faculty, a dissertation is the most promising source to increase the number of publications. But, when it comes to publishing peer-reviewed journal articles, whoever already experienced writing journal articles will definitely agree that publishing articles requires almost the same amount of effort as writing the dissertation.  Sine 2018, I have worked on publishing articles from my dissertation, and finally, by 2021, I got two papers published...See?! It takes almost four years! One of the advantages that I got was I already made my dissertation in a two-paper format. There are two types of dissertations..(or possibly several types); one is a traditional five-chapter format (Introduction-Literature Review-Method-Results-Discussion) and the other is a combined journal article format (Introduction-Paper 1-Paper 2-Paper 3...-Conclusion).   I chose a combined journal article format because my research interests were a general classroom climate which includes s

Happy Pickles

I love fresh pickles! Whenever I went to pizza restaurants in South Korea, I was the one who continuously requested refilling pizza. Not because it is free of charge (hmm...maybe??!), but because I love having pizza with fresh juicy citric pickles!  Home-made pickle is even coming with pleasant. You can nicely decorate your kitchen, just putting it in pickle jars. Green from cucumbers, red from red peppers, orange from carrots, yellow from yellow peppers, and white from garlic and pearl onions!  So, let's make pickles! Empty & clean jar - I usually saved jars after emptying pasta sauces.  Any veggies based on your choice & preference (I used, banana peppers, red chilly peppers, cucumbers, yellow onions, and pearl onions) Parsely or Bay leaves (optional) Three Table Spoons of salt One teaspoon of sugar (you can skip if you don't want sweetness) Four Table Spoons of White Balsamic Vinegar (any type of vinegar is okay!) My favorite balsamic vinegar! 1. The first magic of d

Buche de noel Christmas cake (Yule Log)

It's Christmas time~~!! Still, we are having an unusual holiday due to the pandemic - we need to be careful of crowdedness and safety is the priority. So this year, we decided to celebrate Christmas by ourselves (again like last year) and virtually hang out with our friends and family in South Korea and Turkey.  This year's special Christmas dessert is Buche de Noel. Buche de Noel is often served in many European countries such as Switzerland, France, and Belgium. Also, this cake can be found in South Korea! South Korean are obsessed with Christmas cakes, so when the Christmas season is approaching, people can easily find a variety of cakes from all over the world.  I love baking but I am not a professional baker. I am more a freestyle amateur - change ingredients based on my style. 😜Sometimes, my friends ask if I could just follow the original ingredients so that they can enjoy enough sweetness. Will try! Then, let's start
